Do I 'use AI'?
'Use AI' has some implications so let me answer specifically:Nothing in my work is made by AI
Writing, art, anything. All of it is my original creative work. Period.
But I do use AI as a tool in a few ways:
-Thesaurus and reverse dictionary
-Grammar and tone check
-Language translation
-Format change: 'Make this sentence capitalized'
-Writing Examples for reference when doing my own writingOne of the biggest ways AI 'contributes' as a tool to my work is asking it to write out something like a police report, a news paper article, or other blips of filler writing thats tailored to my already existing concept, story, characters, and intended needs for said blip,
then I use it as a reference— and example— and write it myself.
Everyone struggles with creative block sometimes, and for me and writing it's more easily triggered because I often have issues calling up examples in my own head, finding examples that line up with what im trying to make, or simply finding the words im drawing blanks on. It's not only mentally exhausting, it's a creative poison. Simply having access to tailored examples to work with and build from, gets my creativity flowing again and gets me back into the creative flow.
I sometimes use AI to give me a frame to work with, same creative process of referencing examples as I would do if I got the reference from anywhere else. Are any of my 'ideas' from AI?
The story and characters are all me. But sometimes I get some prompts from AI to work from, same as using a writing prompt/name generator or a list of things you find in an article or blog while googling.
I restrict my use of AI to: 'If I got this from somewhere else, and could not gain any permissions from its source, what am I still allowed to do with this?'
Almost always the answer is as a creative reference, example, or inspiration only, so that's what my use sticks to. Most of the time I get several suggestions and take pieces of the parts I like to make something out of.If my characters or dialog seem flat, robotic, or monotone
Not AI, I am just Autistic. Which is another reason I tend to struggle with words and socializing in general. Belive it or not sometimes AI has more a human tone, or atleast humor, than me! lol
I do ask AI for help with dialog but again, not in a direct copy way, in a have it spit out a dozen different possibilities so my brain can absorb them, take some pieces from them, and use them as references to feed and fuel my own brain working out what the dialog will be.Do I ever copy paste something from AI?
Sure, I copy paste things I got it to translate for me, correct for me, like grammar, and sometimes a term, name, or sentence that's so small and basic literally no one could claim ownership of it. Like 'Yea, that's fine.'
Again, all my use is limited to what can be creatively done without need for permission.Would I ever post/repost something that is AI?
Posting/reposting morally requires permission. So no. I would not (knowingly) post or repost anything AI has made*.
(unless its to laugh at it maybe lol)
Side note: Don't ever treat AI responses as facts or a source. It's an algorithm not a peer reviewed study. Why still use it if it's trained on peoples work without their consent?
Because I don't copy, I reference. If I was browsing on Pinterest and saw a beautiful image I wanted to use as a reference for my own work, on my end, it doesn't matter if the image was reposted without consent because I'm not copying, reposting, or claiming ownership of it, only referencing.
The pinterest user reposting the art is immoral, me using it as a reference anyway (imo) is not.Its horrible on the environment
That's to large a subject for here but as far as the limited information I have been able to find: Not anymore than youtube or social media, in fact less than it seems. And I'm not boycotting those.
Imo for the most part environmental impact is not on the customer as much as its on the industry causing it and the government to regulate those industries. I still support anyone taking the actions they see fit though.AI will take artists jobs
I have no doubt it will. Because we live in a bottom line, money greedy, capitalist hellscape. Thats not me being okay with that fact, but AI isn't the issue, the fact that companies already have and can continue to exploit people is the actual issue. Dont distract your anger to AI when its the industry and companies that's doing the harm. Blaming AI just gives them a scape goat, a free pass, that they don't deserve.Do you pay for AI?
Nope.'Everything should be 100% made by you and/or by another human and/or with as little technology and tools and even references as possible. Art is suffering!'
I've seen this mentality sometimes even outside of the AI debate.
Sorry, I just overall don't agree with that sentiment. I believe to its core it is absolutist thinking held up with elitist and ableist mentalities.
Needing help by human or non-human technology does not devalidate you as a person or artist.
Not having the resources, financially, physically, or mentally, to be a hardcore grindset artist, does not make you a hack or not an artist.
Art from suffering, is art.
And art from happiness, is art.
Art from a human, is art. Even if that human needed some help while they made it.Which leads me to this point
No, if you prompted AI to make something, what it made its not yours, and it does not make you an artist.
If you prompted AI to make something and you used that something as a reference or example to make your own thing, then you are an artist, and what you made is your art. What you see is my creativity, its my creation, it's my art.
If my art and stories are good, its because I'm a good artist.
If my art and stories are bad, its because I'm a bad artist. That's my views— for the moment.
I understand that with the rise of AI fake images, videos, and misinformation, trust is at an all time low now days. It's easier to put our limited trust in someone who wholefully denounces AI than someone who doesn't. But just because someone publicly denounces it doesn't mean they aren't using it. Let alone posting it.
So I hope my honesty here will allow you to trust me when I say:
I only use it in a way that is ethically comparable to non AI alternatives, in the ways I have laid out above.*I will never post AI content
And
I will never substitute my own art and creativity with AI content.I hope you understand and feel welcome in bringing any concerns or issues to my attention.
